Give In May Returns for 5th Year to Mobilize Support for AANHPI Nonprofits

This year’s campaign includes 150 AANHPI-serving nonprofits addressing a wide range of issues—from combating hate and racism to advancing culture, health, and equity.

May 1, 2025 – Celebrating its fifth anniversary, Give In May has launched its annual online fundraising campaign in honor of Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month. Held throughout the month of May, the campaign seeks to raise awareness of the often overlooked challenges facing AANHPI communities and mobilize critical support for nonprofits dedicated to serving them.

Asian Americans are the fastest-growing and one of the most diverse racial groups in the United States, with a population of over 22 million. Many are recent immigrants and refugees who continue to face significant challenges, including poverty, social isolation, and limited access to healthcare and essential services.

Despite the growing needs within these communities, AANHPI organizations remain dramatically underfunded—receiving less than 0.2% of foundation funding and less than 1% of corporate giving, according to Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders in Philanthropy (AAPIP) and The Asian American Foundation (TAAF). Research from the Center for Effective Philanthropy further underscores this gap, noting that philanthropic support for AANHPI organizations has declined in recent years. In 2020 alone, more than two-thirds of nonprofits serving AANHPI communities reported receiving no new funding.

Give In May aims to elevate both awareness and philanthropic investment in nonprofit organizations across the country who are dedicated to addressing the needs of AANHPI communities. This year’s Give In May campaign features 150 nonprofit organizations that serve 17 states and 66 cities. Additional highlights from this year’s participating organizations include:

This year, Give In May is hosted by Community R&D, an organization dedicated to driving innovation for bolder futures, and AAPI Data, a leading national research and policy organization — with support from TAAF.

“Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders make up nearly 7% of the U.S. population, and growing—yet nonprofit organizations serving our communities have received less than 0.2% of philanthropic funding for more than 30 years,” said Karthick Ramakrishnan, Executive Director and Founder of AAPI Data, and Founder of Community R&D. “This May, as we celebrate AANHPI Heritage Month, it’s crucial to recognize not only our achievements, but also the urgent needs hidden in plain sight—from health and education to jobs and housing. Give In May is our opportunity to close the gap, shift the narrative, and build a future our communities deserve.”

“When the Asian Pacific Fund and AAPI Data co-founded Give In May in 2020, we aimed to inspire a new generation of grassroots philanthropy and raise awareness about the nonprofits serving AANHPI communities,” said Tavae Samuelu, Interim Co-Executive Director & Director of Community Initiatives & Grantmaking at Asian Pacific Fund.

“This effort also emerged in response to the rise in anti-Asian hate crimes and the longstanding fundraising challenges faced by these organizations. Five years later, Give In May is more than just a fundraiser; it is a powerful expression of unity and a call to action for uplifting the most underserved AANHPIs.”

“As we celebrate the fifth anniversary of the Give In May campaign this AANHPI Heritage Month, we are reminded of the strength and resilience of our community,” said Chun-Yen Chen, Executive Director of the Asian Pacific Community Fund. “At APCF, our mission is to cultivate philanthropy by uplifting the voices and needs of the AANHPI community and centralizing giving power to invest in its future. Give In May is a powerful moment to come together and support AANHPI nonprofits that are creating lasting impact and equity across the nation. We invite everyone to join us in advancing our shared values of compassion, empowerment, and community through the power of giving.”

“At The Asian American Foundation (TAAF), we are dedicated to building a brighter, more equitable future for the AANHPI community—a future that is only possible with all of us,” said Norman Chen, CEO of TAAF. “Give In May is powerful, because it shows us what we can achieve together. It empowers our community to uplift the organizations doing critical work on the frontlines of safety, prosperity and belonging—combating hate, advancing AANHPI education in schools, supporting creatives and ensuring we are represented at all levels of leadership.”
