July 24, 2024 – Today, AAPI Data released its Data Guide on Hate & Discrimination, a comprehensive and user-friendly digital guide compiling a set of curated data sources to help improve understanding of data on hate incidents and crimes targeting Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) communities.
This data guide is the second in a series of guides that AAPI Data will produce over the coming months to help various audiences—including policy makers, journalists, community organizations, and the general public—to better navigate and understand key insights from a vast array of data and research on a topic. The first data guide pertained to key insights on AAPI public opinion from a variety of surveys that are relevant to the 2024 election.
The Data Guide on Hate & Discrimination includes data sources that have been vetted and reviewed by researchers at AAPI Data, and grouped into the following categories:
- Survey Data: population surveys from sources like AP-NORC, the Pew Research Center, and SurveyMonkey
- Community Reporting Data: data from community reporting tools like Stop AAPI Hate and CA vs. Hate which capture real-time reporting and insights
- Government Data: administrative data from agencies like the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the National Incident Based Reporting System
- Hybrid/Multiple Data Sources: selected data that incorporates information from multiple sources such as government agency data, community reporting tools, and news media
Across the dozens of sources included, hate incident and crime data goes as far back as 1991, allowing for a comprehensive overview of these issues over the past few decades.
“Hate incidents and hate crimes have been an ongoing source of distress and debate within our communities,” said Karthick Ramakrishnan, executive director and founder at AAPI Data. “With different types of data offering different and sometimes contradictory insights, we see a critical need to help community members, researchers, and policymakers better understand the issue.”
AAPI Data released this data guide as a companion resource for its forthcoming report in the fall which will analyze these data sources and the issue of hate on a comprehensive level and through a scholarly lens. “We are excited to share this user-friendly data guide, which illuminates the importance of understanding the nuanced AANHPI experiences with hate and discrimination across multifaceted data sources,” said Connie Tan, PhD, Senior Research Analyst at AAPI Data. “And this guide is just the beginning as AAPI Data plans to release a comprehensive report in Fall 2024, delving deeper into the landscape of data and research on anti-AAPI hate.”
Since the 1880s, Asian American and NHPI communities have confronted waves of hate and discrimination, evolving with each decade. Notable flashpoints in the last 50 years have centered around the settlement of refugees from Southeast Asia (1970s), economic competition with Japan (1980s), racial profiling and violent hate incidents after 9/11 (2000s to present), hate crimes exacerbated by COVID-19 (2020s), and ongoing acts of hate and discrimination associated with xenophobia and Islamophobia. Through rigorous research and data analysis, AAPI Data aims to provide clarity on these critical issues, ensuring a nuanced understanding of their impact on our communities past, present, and future.
“As a first-generation daughter of Filipino immigrants, I am deeply honored to leverage my research background and experience to create a resource guide and analyze data that illuminates the complex history of hate crimes against AANHPIs,” said Clarielisa Ocampo, graduate student researcher for AAPI Data and a doctoral student at the University of California, Riverside. “This research holds a special place in my heart, driven by my own family’s experiences with discrimination in the United States. Research and data are key to having a clear understanding how these developments affect different members of our community, now and into the future.”
