Los Angeles County is the largest county in the nation, with one of the most diverse populations in the world. Nearly one in three residents, or nearly 3.5 million persons, were born outside the United States and a majority of Los Angeles County residents speak a language other than English at home: 38% or3.3 million speak Spanish and 11% or 925,000 speak an Asian or Pacific Islander language. The large number of newcomers who call Los Angeles County home offers unique social, economic and political opportunities. In a world where everything from business to pop culture is globalized, the county’s diversity of cultures and languages is a rich but under utilized asset.
