Summary of findings: With Stop AAPI Hate’s updated hate acts taxonomy, there have been 11,409 total reports across the country between 2020 to 2022 (with 4,409 reports in 2020, 5,679 reports in 2021, and 1,321 reports in 2022). 88% of hate acts reported to Stop AAPI Hate involve some form of harassment, while 23% involve physical harm or constant, 13% involve institutional discrimination, and 6% involve property harm. Across these four broad categories of hate acts, there are not many differences by gender or reporting language (English, Asian, or Pacific Islander languages). Those under 18 report more acts involving written, visual, or auditory material perhaps due to their higher online activity. Those 60 and older report more hate acts involving physical injury, a possible indication that they are more vulnerable to being physically targeted or more likely to report these types of hate acts.
