The new features of the Community Data Explorer enable users to access highly localized data about specific communities within the AANHPI umbrella.

In May 2024, AAPI Data and a host of community partners launched the AANHPI Community Data Explorer, an innovative platform to provide data-driven insights on Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) communities across the country.

Today, we are excited to announce the launch of several new and compelling features in the Community Data Explorer that enable users to access highly localized data about specific communities within the AANHPI umbrella.

The interactive dashboard now features detailed subpopulation breakdowns based on categories such as gender, nativity, poverty level, and more. This was a frequently requested feature from our community partners. With our new “Subpopulations” feature, community partners working on educational access can examine differences in educational attainment by gender or by poverty level within each detailed community such as Hmong, Vietnamese, and Samoan. This kind of information enables our communities to dig even deeper than before, and will improve community advocacy with government agencies and private foundations.

Community partners also often requested industry and occupation tables. We’re excited to introduce new industry/occupation tables, where users can find specific breakdowns on a subpopulation. For example, the tables show that 10% of all chefs and head cooks in the nation are Chinese, 64% of all manicurists and pedicurists in California are Vietnamese, and the top 3 most common occupations for NHPIs nationwide are waiters/waitresses, chefs/cooks, and elementary middle school teachers.

Whether you’re a researcher, advocate, or policymaker, these new features offer sharper insights to support your work.

There are now a variety of exportable PDF reports available for easy downloading. Users can choose to download a community snapshot—a stylized set of data and infographic charts—or download data on a community deep dive, which includes all data for a given community in a tabular format.

“Whether you’re a researcher, advocate, or policymaker, these new features offer sharper insights to support your work,” said Karthick Ramakrishnan, executive director and founder of AAPI Data. “We’re proud to offer innovative new tools and features to better capture data on the diversity of our AANHPI communities.”
