Population: Focused on anti-Asian racism; national

Summary of findings: In a comprehensive review of 4,337 news articles from 2020, the project identified 1,023 unique incidents of anti-Asian racism in the United States. These incidents encompassed various forms of racism, including physical and verbal harassment, avoidance, vandalism, and stigmatizing statements. The majority of these incidents, 679 in total, involved harassment and vandalism, accounting for about two-thirds of all reported anti-Asian incidents. Another significant category, comprising one-third of the incidents, involved 344 cases where individuals propagated stigmatizing and discriminatory statements, images, policies, and proposals, further perpetuating harmful stereotypes against Asian and Asian American communities.
