Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders represent 4.9 percent of the population in the United States. According to the 2010 Census, this population grew faster than any other group between 2000 and 2010 with an increase of 43 percent. Health care reform will provide coverage to countless uninsured and underinsured Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders (AAs and NHPIs). estimates from rAND suggest by 2016, 2.0 million Asian Americans will gain or be eligible for health care under the provisions found in the Affordable Care Act. An expanded medicaid program, new Health Insurance exchanges, the Pre-existing Condition Insurance Plan, the Small Business Health Options Program exchange, and the extension of coverage for young adults to remain on their parent’s health plan until age 26, offers our communities new options for affordable, quality care.
